Lise Harlev, 2009

My work explores the formation of identity and the factors that help construct this feeling of identity, be it nationality, intimate relationships or political views. Though my work has taken on such different forms as silkscreen prints, enamel signs, stained glass and photography, it has always drawn aesthetically on graphic design and explored how a subjective content is expressed with an aesthetic designed for the public. At BAC I will be working on a new piece about remembering and revisiting the place where I grew up.

I graduated from The Royal Danish Art Academy, Copenhagen, in 2002, and have been based in Berlin since then. My work has been included in exhibitions such as Manifesta 4 (Frankfurt, 2002), Momentum – Nordic Festival of Contemporary Art (Moss, 2004), I don’t always agree (Galleria Maze, Turin, 2005), This Land Is My Land (Kunsthalle Nürnberg, 2006), I (Ich)/Performative Ontology (Secession, Vienna, 2006), Terms of Use (Centro Cultural Montehermoso, Vitoria, 2008), Translation Paradoxes and Misunderstandings (Shedhalle, Zurich, 2009), Liquid Frontiers (Tri Postal, Lille, 2009).

Lise Harlev has been invited to BAC as part of the Artist-in-Residence program for Nordic artists funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers.
