On Mobilisation and Visual Literacy

The On Mobilisation and Visual Literacy project will develop in collaboration with key stakeholders in the Gotland media and information literacy sector. The project aims to develop new methods to strengthen the visual literacy of young people. The work is being led by a study circle comprising Mia Nydahl Müller (artist and art teacher at Wisby Upper Secondary School), Anna Näslund (Professor of Art History at Stockholm University and researcher at the Institute for Futures Studies), Toril Johannessen (Norwegian artist) and Helena Selder (Artistic Director at BAC). The group is also joined by representatives and pupils from the project’s partners: Film on Gotland, Library Development Gotland, Visby Upper Secondary School, Gotland Art Museum, and Uppsala University Graduate School in Sustainability Studies.

This expanded study circle will collectively reflect on the current meaning of visual literacy, mapping out and developing knowledge and methods in the process. Methods and activities will be co-created with young people aged 16–19 and may result in workshops led by and involving young people, as well as public events such as exhibitions.

On Mobilisation and Visual Literacy forms part of the collaborative project On Mobilisation. Towards Multivocal Collaborative Futures, which is co-funded by the European Union 2026-2029, and is run by the following partner organisations: Lavanderia a Vapore in Turin, Baltic Art Center in Visby, Out of Sight in Antwerp, Divadlo X10 in Prague, and BLOK – Local Base for Culture Refreshment in Zagreb.

The project creates opportunities for collective learning, co-creation and experimentation. It views culture as an arena in which democratic relationships can be practised and communities can come together to address challenging issues. It also recognises the potential of artistic creation to contribute to fairer, more considerate and sustainable ways of living and working together.
