GRASS Fellow Kim Laybourn
During his time on Gotland, Kim Laybourn will further develop his project The Realm of Things, which explores the bespirited landscape and builds on his earlier work The Animate Landscape. Both projects depict a humanised landscape that draws attention to itself and appears expressive and autonomous. While The Animate Landscape takes the plant kingdom as its starting point, The Realm of Things introduces the realm of minerals. During his residency on Gotland, the artist will collect material such as stones, fossils, and other geological phenomena to incorporate into his video work.
Kim Laybourn is a Danish visual artist who is currently based in Norway. His work moves between the fantastical and the real, exploring humanity’s relationship with the non-human world. Using video, sound, music, text, animation, drawing and sculpture, he explores humanity’s place in the world based on everything we come into contact with, and which surrounds and shapes us.
On 13 October at 5.00 pm at Folkets Bio Betty in Visby, we are organising a film screening followed by a conversation with Kim Laybourn and Sara Kurland, a Geosciences researcher at Uppsala University's Gotland Campus. Everyone is welcome, and admission is free!
GRASS Fellow programme
Using slow travel from all corners of the Nordic-Baltic region, the GRASS Fellow programme invites artists with a particular focus on sustainability issues to Campus Gotland. The aim of the residency programme is twofold: for the artists to deepen their practice in dialogue with researchers and students, and to enrich the campus environment with artistic experiments, field trips, workshops and artistic interventions that contribute to increased curiosity, awareness and knowledge about sustainability issues. To immerse the artists in the academic environment, a workspace is provided on Campus Gotland in Visby for the duration of the residency. The programme also provides resources for visiting artists to organise public events on campus.
