Kiev-based visual culture researcher, curator and emerging filmmaker, Liza Babenko is the third guest in the framework of the Gotland Film Lab residency Spring/Summer 2015. She will stay at BAC between May 18 and 29, 2015 to work on her experimental documentary project “The name of what is Maidan?”.

Liza Babenko

received her MA in Philosophical Anthropology and Philosophy of Culture from the Russian Anthropological School at the Russian State University for the Humanities, Moscow. She is an activist with the Visual Culture Research Center, Kiev and the art and activist group Feminist Ofenziva. Babenko regularly contributes to magazines including Art Ukraine, Springerin, Colta.ru, COMMONS: Journal of Social Criticism and Korydor. Among other projects she was co-curator of the Feminist Workshop in collaboration with Boryana Rossa in the fridge & Haspel (Sofia) and participated in “Commentators”, an exhibition and event series within the Katarzyna Kozyra Foundation (Warsaw). Babenko co-authored the theatre performance "Energy of Kosmos Is Indestructible!!!" with Anton Vidokle (artist, New York). It was premiered at “Former West: Documents, Constellations, Prospects”, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, March 18, 2013 in the context of the research congress Former West (2008-2014) as a joint collaboration between BAK, basis voor actuele kunst, Utrecht and Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin. She has directed several short videos documenting Kiev Maidan.
