The Macedonian artist Yane Calovski (born 1973),
with whom the Baltic Art Center inaugurates its "production-in-residence"
program in 2004, has developed a series of works that constitute
the project titled "Everything is after something". In
the process, Calovski established a collaboration with the Swedish
band Sebastian & Sebastian and the artist Tobias Sjoberg composing
a sound work based on a text by Robert Barrys 1970s
concept "Art Work"; as well as material for a short film
that documents another interest in his production here the
desert islands that have become "free-associative territories".
The work includes a process of translation of concepts from one
context into another. "Art Work" of Robert Barry form
1970 being transferred into a music composition, "Two parallel
lines drawn in the desert" by Walter de Maria serving as a
starting point for the film of the desert islands surrounding the
main island of Gotland.
Furthermore, Calovski has worked on a series of drawings that cultivate
a language of free associations - meaning constructed from a bank
of personal images and found sources. This project, as other works
by Calovski, functions as a context-based relational work that calls
to attention the formulation of meaning in the realm of conceptual
art practice engaged with social discourse.
The concluding element in the production is a book project that
will consolidate the entire material and represent the first publication
solely devoted to the work of Yane Calovski. The book in the context
of Calovskis project will side step the general conditions
and expectations of the "exhibition catalogue" and will
function more as an independent publication associating itself with
the art work.
